About Fovea Creative

Fovea Creative is a specialist creative agency which has been serving charities, social enterprises and vountary organisations for 28 years.

Beginnings

After working 10 years in the not-for-profit sector - in roles spanning housing, regeneration, campaigning and community development - I went solo in 1996. As someone who commissioned design, photography and other creative services, I had often felt that the sector was not well served in this area. Many commercial agencies seemed not to understand or share the values of the sector.

Values

As I built the business, I was determined to honour the social and environmental values of the clients I served. I can honestly say that I believe wholeheartedly in the work all my clients do. And that’s important to me, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

New name, same dedication to service and values

In 2021 - marking my 25th anniversary as a designer and photographer, having completed thousands of commissions for dozens of clients - I decided to relaunch with a new name, a new look and a more balanced emphasis on my two great loves: design and photography. Photography has always been the foundation of my design work and I’m now expanding this part of my practice. What started out as Cuthbert Design, in 1996, became Fovea Creative.

Why Fovea?

The ‘fovea’ is a tiny area of the retina, at the back of our eyes, which is responsible for the central area of vision. It generates a far more detailed image than the rest of the retina, being densely packed the receptors which send visual information to our brains. Think of it like a tiny, super high resolution camera sensor in the middle of a larger, lower resolution sensor.

Ever since learning about the fovea at school, it’s fascinated me! And, of course, it’s of critical importance to photographers and designers.
